What is the International Baccalaureate Program?
The IB Program is a rigorous two-year program designed for highly motivated university committed high school students. Supervised by the International Baccalaureate Organization (IBO) in Geneva, Switzerland, IB is an internationally recognized and respected course of study, which provides a uniquely integrated curriculum emphasizing rigor, breadth, depth, and coherence. The IB program also provides its participants with the opportunity to earn advanced placement and/or credit at the university level.
Why Choose the IB Program?
The true measure of a student’s potential for success is not grade point average, SAT scores or even rank in a class at graduation. Simply put, it is this: The challenge of the academic courses that a student pursues during high school. That is why we are honored and proud to be an IB World School. The IB program challenges a student throughout four years across six different disciplines: English, math, science, social studies and an elective. It is the best well balanced and challenging set of academic and service expectations to be offered in American schools, private or public.

What does the Pre-IB and IB Program mean for my child?
At Highland High School the IB program begins as the Pre-IB in the ninth grade. Our students are taken through each year of study with the ultimate goal of graduation from the IB program. Ninth and tenth grades consist of Pre-IB classes that prepare our students for the IB courses ahead. It is in these years that we encourage our Pre-IB students to complete such courses as P.E. ad Healthful Living during the summer to clear the schedule for all IB courses in eleventh and twelfth grades. The IB coordinator and a very active staff supervise Highland’s Pre-IB Program. Along with all staff members teaching at the eleventh and twelfth grade levels, many of our freshmen and sophomore level teachers have already attended special training sessions conducted by the IBO in order to better prepare Pre-IB students for instruction at the IB level. We are proud of the dedication of our staff and are confident they will play a key role in the success of our students at every level.
In the eleventh and twelfth grades the students focus on the IB classes. In these years the students will also enroll in the Theory of Knowledge (TOK) course. This is a seminar style class where students study the nature of knowledge and work to integrate the different types of knowledge in various academic disciplines.
IB Hallmarks

Each eleventh and twelfth grade IB student is required to complete fifty hours in each of these areas. This includes but is not limited to music, drama, sports and volunteering in the community.

A 4000 word research paper written during their junior and senior years, on a topic of his or her choice using one of the six subject areas of the IB program.
Our Philosophy
The key focus of Highland High Schools program is to develop mature and successful students. To that end, we stress the development of study skills, effective time management techniques and the kind of positive attitudes that create successful lifelong learners. Even with the additional support we offer our students, we have found that the IB program isn’t for everyone. In fact, those students who have the drive and determination to excel are our most successful Pre-IB and IB students. Any student planning to attend a university or college should consider the IB program.
