11/3/06:  The months of October and November the Art 1 classes are focusing on European and Asian calligraphy and how these types of lines can be incorporated into their future art work. Background information on European calligraphy assignment includes medieval historic facts, illuminated manuscripts, heraldry symbology, knights and armor and Celtic art. Art students will be creating several calligraphy projects with dip pens and ink. From simple calligraphy practice and full page of poem or lyrics to a knotted letter and calligram. The European section ends with the production of a greeting card that includes original artwork and new calligraphy fonts and styles. The Asian calligraphy unit will include background information on Chinese and Japanese culture, Asian Zodiac signs and significance, kimono designs, sodoku puzzles, Japanese Kanji letters and carving a Chop stamp. The Chinese brush painting section will include information about the Chinese culture and creation of their "Floating World" paintings. Art students will be creating a variety of projects that incorporate the Asian calligraphy and brush painting techniques such as a Kanji greeting card, Chinese brush fan and banner, and an original carved Chop seal.

The advanced drawing and Painting classes are working on a variety of graphic art projects. They have been working on assignments in their art journal where they must sketch and study a various subjects as well as write about the experience. The graphic art projects include original designs for a personal logo, Celtic design, and a book jacket for a novel they have read and are very familiar with.
