This classic was in serious consideration for the Pulitzer Prize for Drama for 1934–35.
Its controversial subject matter got in the way of going the distance.
It is a drama, a tragedy, at that, which begs thought and conversation.
A little girl, at a boarding school outside Boston in 1934, who will do anything to get her way, tells a lie and this lie bonds with a community’s prejudices. Lie and prejudice combine to destroy several people’s lives in the course of the play.
