Work Experience/Permits

WORK PERMITS ARE A LEGAL REQUIREMENT FOR ALL MINORS THROUGHOUT THE YEAR!

 

BELOW ARE THE STEPS FOR THE WORK PERMIT APPLICATION PROCESS:

1. Complete all REQUIRED information on the Work Permit Application.  The application can be accessed HERE.

• Minor's information - Please complete all the required information for the student.
• Parent/guardian's signature and date are REQUIRED.
• Employer must complete the work permit application with all the required information.  We cannot accept copied or stamped signatures.

2. Email the Work Experience Coordinator for an appointment.  Same day appointments are NOT AVAILABLE!

• You must use your school issued email to make an appointment.
• Indicate which school you attend and your student ID number.
• Be sure that you have completed all of step 1 above, prior to requesting your appointment.
• DUE TO CONFIDENTIAL INFORMATION, PLEASE DO NOT EMAIL COMPLETED APPLICATION!

3. Bring the following to your appointment:

• MINOR STUDENT MUST BE PRESENT! (Parent is not required to be present).
• Proof of age - birth certificate, driver's license or California ID.
• COMPLETED Work Permit Application with ORIGINAL signatures - employer, parent and minor student.
• Your own pen to sign application.

WORK EXPERIENCE EDUCATION

Provides paid or unpaid on-the-job experiences for secondary school students through training agreements with employers.  Please contact the Work Experience Coordinator at your student's school.  Types of work experience programs include:

• Vocational
• General
• Exploratory

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

All Work permits expire August 15th.  If you plan to continue to work you will need to completely fill out a new B1-1 work permit application. This includes the employer signature and parent/guardian signature. Please drop the work permit application off in the counselor's office.  Grades and attendance from last semester 24-25 school year will be checked.  It does take up to 72 hours to process a work permit.

• Child Labor Laws: Students work for a wide variety of reasons—to earn income, gain on-the-job experience, or connect what they are learning in the classroom to the real world. Minors employed in the state of California must have a Permit to Employ and Work (commonly referred to as a “work permit”). Work permits are typically issued by the school where the student is enrolled. Work permits indicate the location of the employer as well as the number of hours a minor may work.
